Magazine Research & Analysis

The purpose of these tasks are to help me understand the existing magazine industry and to help me develop my ideas when it comes to making my own magazine. I am going to analyse a few mixed genre magazines, to understand the conventions of each type; enhancing my understanding of what I should include to help make my music magazine successful. Here are the ones I analysed.

Media Distributors

As part of secondary research, I researched online to look for current media distributors and I discovered that Bauer is Europe's number one privately owned publishing groups. It offers over 3000 types of magazines in 15 countries. The companies biggest selling magazine is FHM. This would be a good company to distribute my magazine because they are well established and are responsible for the sales of FHM meaning that they could help establish my magazine to the same standard, another reason is that they produce a lot of magazine and they are a global brand that sell in 15 countries.

Seymour is another magazine distributor. This company has 13% market share in the magazine distribution industry. It exports magazines to over 90 countries and is the UK's biggest magazine distributor internationally. As this is such a developed company, it is a stable business to go to, to develop magazines, this would be a good distributor for my magazine Rock.

This is another magazine distributor, this one is smaller than the other two, but it offers more to help with the launch of the magazine, offering advice from the barcode to the cover page of the magazine. They offer to work in partnership with you to help make the magazine as successful as possible. This would also be a good distributor for my magazine Rock as it is a new magazine, trying to establish itself within the United Kingdom, this would be a good option as they offer help with the establishment.

Shot Types
I have taken some pictures of my sister to explore different shot types.

Wide shot - This is used to show the whole body of someone, often used to show clothing.

Mid shot - This is used to get a profile of someone, often seen on the cover of magazines.

Low angle - This gives the illusion that someone is bigger and more powerful.

High angle - This gives the illusion that someone is smaller and weaker.

Close up - This is used to show detail of something or someone.

Extreme close up - This is used to portray emotion, for example the eyebrows to show aggression.
